Reading the Oscars

Tonight is Hollywoods' big night. The Academy Awards. The Oscars. The fashions, the films, the books?
Many of tonights movies started out as books, and someone, somewhere along the way thought 'Hey this would be a good movie.' Sometimes the movie is true to the book, barely missing a single note. Other times well, lets say the director took some creative license and strayed from the book. Either way, The Academy Awards can lead people to great books and vice-versa - Great Books can lead people to a great film.

Here are some of the great books that made their way to being great movies.

Best Friends Forever: a World War II Scrapbook by Beverly Patt

Best Friends Forever tells the story of 14 year old Japanese American Dottie Masuoka and Louise Krueger as their lives and friendship must change with the internment of all Japanese American during World War II. Louise starts a scrapbook, documenting events that have happened with the intent of sharing it with Dottie when she returns.
I think those of you who enjoy historical fiction or enjoy a mixed media sort of book will breeze through this one.
Things I liked: the scrapbook format, the newspaper clippings and advertising promos of the time, the different fonts used to indentify the girls.
Things I didn't like: I wish it were a Canadian book, I didn't like how open ended it was - is this the first installment of a series?, and of course at the end of the book there is the statement "Three days after Pearl Harbour, Germany and Italy declared war on the US as well. World War II had begun."

Dead End in Norvelt

Dead End In Norvelt by Jack Gantos

This book just won the Newbery Award for best children's fiction. Jack Gantos once again gives us a glimpse of what must have been a crazy upbringing (even if these events didn't exactly happen to him, he still is drawing from something he knows to make it so believable.)

Summary:

Melding the entirely true and the wildly fictional , Dead End in Norvelt, is a novel about an incredible two months for a kid named Jack Gantos, who's plans for vacation excitement are shot down when he is "grounded for life" by his fueding parents, and who's nose spews bad blood at every little shock he gets. But plenty of shocks and excitement are coming Jack's way once his Mom loans him out to help a fiesty old neighbour with a most unusual chore.

Endlessly surprizing, this sly sharp-edge narrative is the author at his very best, making readers laugh out loud at the most unexpected things in a dead-funny depiction of growing up in a slightly of kilter place where the past is present, the present is confusing, and the future is completely up in the air.

I can say from personal experience that this book not only had me laughing out loud, but I've tested it on grade 7's and 8's and yes it got them laughing too.

I chose to make a giant size Wordle, I asked my friends at school to finish this sentence - Libraries are... - this provided tonnes of inspiration. The Crazy Man

The Crazy Man by Pamela Porter

I wanted to revisit this gem of a book, it left me hungry for the hot, dry days of summer, with crickets chirping, winds making the fields of wheat move as if in choreographed wave, and a simplier time.

Here's the summary:
In 1965, twelve year old Emaline , living on a wheat farm, must deal with a family that is falling apart. When her dog Prince, chases a hare into the path of the tractor, she chases after him, and her father accidently runs over her leg, leaving her with a long recovery and a permanent disability. Even worse, from Emaline's point of view, is that in his grief and guilt, her father shoots Prince and leaves Emaline and her mother on their own.

This is a novel written in verse, so it reads very quickly, it's a touching story and will make you think about how times and values have changed.
Here's my favourite passage.
"Heard coyotes in the night
from my open window.
Far away.
One pack calling,
another answering.
Young ones yipping
along with deeper voices.
Smell of wood smoke
on the night air.
A full moon.
Their high whines.
Their wild choir.

It's like I'm standing right there next to Emaline, hearing and feeling everything she is. Now that's good writing.

Wolf Rider

Wolf Rider by Avi

This is an interesting twist on the boy who cried wolf story. I was in need of a change up from the stack of dystopian future books that I'd been reading, and this provided just the right amount of mystery / thriller that I was looking for. A fast read with an unexpected ending.

"The phone rang three times before Andy picked it up. "Hello?" he said. A voice replied, "I just killed someone. I killed ... Nina."

Andy Zadinski in convinced that the man who calls himself "Zeke" is serious. But no one will listen to Andy - not his friends, not the police, not even his father. They all say he's crying wolf, even when Andy discovers that there really is a Nina Klemmer. Even when he spots her at the local college and sees that she fits Zeke's description fo her. Exactly.

Despite warnings from his father that he should just forget about the call, Andy feels obligated to track Nina down and warn her. What if Zeke really is plotting to kill her? When Andy investigates futher, he finds out that Nina may not be Zeke's only target...

All These Things I've Done by Gabrielle Zevin

In 2083, chocolate and coffee are illegal, paper is hard to find, water is carefully rationed, and New York City is rife with crime and poverty. And yet for Anya Balanchine, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the city's most notorious (and dead) crime boss, life is fairly routine. It consists of going to school, taking care of her siblings and her dying grandmother, trying to avoid falling in love with the new assistant DA's son, and avoiding her loser ex-boyfriend. That is until her ex is accidentally poisoned by the chocolate her family manufactures and the police think she's to blame. Suddenly Anya finds herself thrusts unwillingly into the spotlight - at school, in the news, and most importantly within her mafia family.

I've enjoyed all of Gabrielle Zevin's books so far, so I was not disappointed with this one either. I quickly fell into liking the character Anya and her family, I love the Romeo / Juliet concept of forbidden love - and family duty, I liked the dystopian future ideas although I think that they could have been elaborated on. So I'd probably give it 4/5 on the readability scale - unfortunately I think they've talked Gabrielle into making this a series, when it really is a great stand alone story.
I think lots of you will enjoy it.

Nex-generation digital book

Last week Mr. Hall sent a very interesting link to a TED talk that is very relevant to libraries, schools and the future of books.

Later in the day I watched the clip with two classes of grade seven's. Here is some of the discussion and comments we had.
Cool -- (first and foremost.)
Content could be constantly revised and updated with the latest statistics, info-graphs and maps -- maybe information could also be made country specific rather than looking at info only pertaining to United States we could look at others as well.
Jobs of the future -- graphic design, videographers, software design, copy editors (fact checkers).
Appeals to a larger audience - than just text.
Problems with creating a digital divide between the haves' and the have/nots.
Easily damaged - if you drop it, etc.
Hacking issues.
Eliminates the problem of heavy backpacks.
Choosing the best/right format. What will it be next month - is this the flavour of the week?

Students weren't sure if they would be seeing this sort of textbook in their high-school years, some were optimistic in thinking 2 years, but most thought it was about five years away.

Ashfall by Mike Mullin

Did I mention that I've been on a dystopian future kick these days. Well, here's another one that made it's way into my hands- but I think I'm gonna let one of you be the first reader (I started a realistic fiction this morning.)

Summary from the book jacket:
Many visitors to Yellowstone National Park don't realize that the boiling hot springs and spraying geysers are caused by an underlying supervolcano, so large that the caldera can only be seen by plane or satellite. And by some scientific measurements, it could be overdue for an eruption.

Beware, this is another one that has a sequel -- which won't be released until later this year (probably September / October.)

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans

Superpowers? What would yours be? Would you want to be able to read minds? How about stop time? or reverse time? How about generate electricity? or make people feel a certain way?
In the story of Michael Vey a group of teenagers (all born on the same day at the same hosipal in Pasadena) who discover that their is something special -- in fact very special about themselves. Most have been gathered up by evil genius Hatch and have been quickly forced into doing his bidding. All except Michael and Taylor. I'm not going to give too much more away, but this is where the going really gets started.
I think this will find it's way into the hands of those of you who enjoy the Percy Jackson books and also those who enjoy x-men. Kind of an underdog story in a battle of good vs. evil.

The Line by Teri Hall

Well, it seems like a round of dystopian future type books has hit my desk and here is another one -- The Line by Teri Hall.

From the publisher:
An invisible, uncrossable physical barriers encloses the United States. The line is part of the border that lopped off part of the country, dooming the inhabitants to an unknown fate when the enemy used a banned weapon. It's said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the otherside in Away. Nobody except tough old Ms. Moore would live next to the line.
Nobody but Rachel and her mother, who went to live there after Rachel's Dad died in the last war. It's a safe, quiet life. Untile Rachel finds a mysterious recorded message that can only have come from Away. The voice is asking for help.

Together with their new neighbor Delilah, the Barker boys are deadset on cracking the case even if it means putting themselves in harm's way.

I'm a fan of Elise Broach and we've just had a group of students use her book Shakespeare's Secret as a litertature circle choice, so I know that this one will fly off the shelves before long.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Not since the days when I made my way through the Black Stallion series by Walter Farley have I been this caught up in a horse racing book. But this is a horse racing book with a twist, this is a horse racing book that is layered with mythology and legends that I had never heard of - the capall uisce, horses that are from the sea, horses that are wild and untamable except for a short time each year when the Scorpio Races are held. But even then the call of the salt air and the crashing waves of the sea call to these beings, and a rider must be on his guard because these horses want nothing more than to drag them into the sea with them. Sean is the returning champion and seems to have a way of speaking with these beasts, Puck is a young girl who is the first girl to ever enter the competition and who has nothing to lose but everything to gain if she wins. Both will have to do battle with the other riders, their horses and each other.

I know for some of you this will be too much of a stretch of the imagination, but the characters of both Sean and Puck are well developed and so to are those of the horses they will ride on the first day of November.

Legend by Marie Lu

Well, I have just read my favourite book of 2012!! Legend by Marie Lu, will grab you by the arm and race you down back alleys, into skiv fights, and having you cheering for both Day and June even though they are on opposite sides of the battle. This might be your next great read -- no I'm gonna take that back, this will be your next great read. I think readers will appreciate the fast pace of the story, the Robin Hood type of character that is Day, the intensity of June and ultimately figuring out that all is not as it seems. This is the first book of you guessed it a trilogy and unfortunately we have to wait until September for book 2.

Holiday reading

As you can see, I've taken a break from blogging (most due to the fact that I was at the cabin - with no access to the internet) but that doesn't mean that I wasn't keeping up with my holiday reading. Here's some the the titles that I read over the break.

Six days by Philip Webb - Futuristic steampunk adventure of four kids, two from London who's lives exist savenging and demolishing the city and two strangers from a far away place looking for a treasure that will fulfill the prophecy. Not my favourite, I didn't feel really connected with any of the characters, the slang dialect used in the dialog was distracting but I did like the premise of this futuristic London being dismantle in order to find the hidden "artifacts".

Mistwood by Leah Cypess - This book had lots packed into it, mystery, intrigue, loyalty and betrayal. Here's the write up from the back cover:
Isabel remembers nothing before the prince rode into her forest to take her back to the castle. Nothing about who she is supposed to be, or the powers she is supposed to have. Prince Rokan needs Isabel to be his Shifter. He needs her ability to shift to animal form, her lethal speed, and her superhuman strength. Extrarodinary by Nancy Werlin

I had high expectations for this book - I fell in love with Impossible and was anxious for this to have the same sort of appeal. Unfortunately maybe I had set the bar too high, because although I read it through it never really grabbed me in that same way. I have to admit that for three quarters of the book I kept confusing the protagonist and antagonist. Were their names too similar or their characters too similar - I don't know, I just couldn't seem to differentiate the two of them. -- Here's the summary: Phoebe finds herself drawn to Mallory, the strange new girl at school. The two become close as sisters... until Mallory's magnetic older brother, Ryland, appears. Pyland has an immediate exciting hold on Phoebe. But it's a dangerous hold, for it makes her question her feelings about her best friend and, worse, about herself. Then Phoebe discovers the shocking, fantastical truth about Ryland and Mallory, and about an age-old debt they expect Phoebe to pay. Will she be strong enough to resist? Will she be special enough to save herself?

Dirt Road Home by Watt Key -- This is a companion book to Alabama Moon which I am a fan of. I definately think we'll have readers for this book - fan of the first of course but also fans of The Outsiders and Rumblefish, or Touching Spiritbear might find this a book of interest. Three months after escaping from Pinson Boy's Home, Hal Mitchell is captured and taken to Hellenweler Boys' Home. Pinson was a vacation spot next to this place. Hellenweiler may be called a "Boys' Home," but it's as bad as any prison, just with younger prisoners. Hall plans to behave and get out early, so he refuses to join a gang. But the more he tries to stay out of everyone's way, the harder the other inmates try to make him fail. and the people in charge don't care what happens to him....

Beat the Band by Don Calame -- sequel to Swim the Fly if you loved the first book you won't be disappointed. Once again I laughed out loud, was grossed out and had moments when I said to myself "guys!!!**#@!!*" in exasperation. This time we have Cooper as our narrator and I didn't really like him at first - he's loud, obnoxious and full of himself, but eventually he wears you down and you start to see glimpses of his other side and suddenly his is redeemed. And of course how do you win girls over? By winning Battle of the Bands, of course.

We will be skyping with author Don Calame and I can't wait to be meeting him as well as reading more of what he will be writing in the future.

Each year I try to add at least one Christmas story to our collection and this year this was my pick. Maybe it's because my Mom was a French Canadian. Anyways, I hope you'll enjoy this years' pick.
Here's the summary:
One frosty Christmas Eve in the Canadian wilderness, six homesick fur traders are visited by a mysterious stranger. The man claims he can send them home to far away Montreal that very night, but on one condition: they must not utter a word until they reach their homes. Agreeing to the terms, the fur traders climb into an enchanted canoe and paddle through the sky. But when hot-headed Armand cannot keep silent, it will take a daring move to outwit the stranger.

Blindsided

Blindsided by Priscilla Cummings

There were definately parts of this book I really enjoyed and then there were parts that I felt weren't so believable, a little over-dramatic, or maybe too convenient. I guess I'll rate it a 3 outta 5.

Here's the summary:
Natalie is a typical fourteen-year-old girl: a great student, lots of friends, a loving family. Her life seems perfect. But when a routine visit to the eye doctor reveals that she will soon go blind, she is devastated. As if this wasn't shocking enough, she is then forced to leave everything behind and go to a school for the blind to learn the skills she will need to survive. While she does what she's told, inwardly she desperately hopes for a miracle that will save her sight. But ultimately, Natalie must decide how to go on when her future isn't what she expects.

Titanic Sinks!

I think this has to be my new favourite Titanic book. to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic this book makes you feel as though you were living during that time period and you'll be in the same kind of disbelief that people around the world were that fateful night 100 years ago. Denenberg has created a unique way to tells his story, he has created a fictional magazine that then relays all the people and events leading up to April 14, 1912.

My family devoured the adventures of Tin Tin. Originally published in 1943 they have kept young people entertained since then. And now they are being recreated for another audience by none other than Stephen Spielberg. Yes, they are coming to a big screen near you - December 23.

A Season of Gift by Richard Peck

Recently I had a display of holiday and winter inspired books in the library. I am able to book talk many of them, and believe they set the tone for the upcoming holiday and get us ready for winter. But I hadn't read this gem yet, so I brought it home with me last night and finished it in one reading.
In August of 1958 the Barnhart family has moved in next door to the mysterious, unflappable Mrs. Dowdell. What could be worse? The fact that your the new kids in town or the fact that your the new kids in town and the preacher's kids? Along the way to making friends and adjusting to small town life there's ghosts, and pranks, Elvis, stealing Christmas trees and much more.

Kinetic Contraptions

Kinetic Contraptions : build a hovercaft, airboat, and more with a hobby motor by Curt Gabrielson

This book is chock full of cool projects, right away we wanted to build a hovercraft and the three wheeler car. I sent my husband off to find us a hobby motor (found one at Best Buy for $3.50), rounded up a paint stick, some rubberbands, a bulldog clip, the gluegun, and some connection wire and I think we're ready to create.
Things we both liked about the book:
- simple materials that can be found around the house, everything from paperclips, paint sticks, and clothes pins to paperplates, empty pop bottles and corks.
- Black and white photos explaining the steps to take in contructing the contraption.
- The science behine what makes it work.
- The basics of how electricity works (my husband is an electrician and he thought some of his first year apprentices should have a look at this.)
- The projects are cool and once you've built one, you could easily disassemble it and build a different one.

Once we've got it up and running I will post some photos.

Last week I was asking students for something good to read, something with a strong male protagonist. I had lots of suggestions, many I had already read, some were just too big. I ended up taking January -book one of the Conspiracy 365 series home with me and well -- WOW! I certainly got what I asked for. It was a crazy wild ride from beginning to end, and then ending well what can I say they left the poor guy inside an oil storage tank with it slowly being refilled with the heavy smelly slick stuff. If you're not grasping for book 2 February , you'd better check to see if you have a pulse.
If you like Alex Rider or the 39 clues series then this might be a good pick for you.

Well, I hadn't had a big dose of chic-lit in quite awhile so that is what's up with this post and the previous one. I have to admit that I am a fan of Johnson's first book 13 Little Blue Envelopes and was happy to go along for the ride in this follow up book, The Last Little Blue Envelope. Heading off with Ginny on a European adventure is a bit of a lark for me, cottoncandy kind of stuff - great once in a while but I wouldn't want to have it every day.

I've started digging through the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) boxes and have been picking afew jems - or what I hope will be jems, out to be reading. I also realized that I had been reading a whole bunch of non-fiction titles or dystopian future books and that it was time to change some of that up. So this one got brought home with me and while it is a dystopian future book it is also kind of a retelling of the sleeping beauty story. I wasn't disappointed, but I don't think it will make "can't wait to tell you guys about it" list either. It reminded me a lot of - Across the Universe by Beth Revis.

Icefall by Matthew J. Kirby

I read this book last week and felt completely caught up in it. If your looking for your next action / adventure book that is somewhat based in mythology (like the Percy Jackson books), I would recommend that your give this one a try. I especially liked the aspect of Solveig becoming a storyteller, and retelling the myths and legends of her people (Norse, I think) to keep the peace, to keep them hopeful or motivate them. It truly showed the power of story and the strength of her character.

Summary:
Trapped in a hidden fortress tucked between towering moutains and a frozen sea, Solveig, along with her brother the crown prince, their older sister, and an army of restless warriors, anxiously awaits news of her father's victory at battle. But as the winter stretches on and the unending ice refuses to break, terrible acts of treachery soon make it clear that a traitor lurks in their midst. A malevolent air begins to seep through the fortress walls and a smouldering claustrophobia slowly turns these prisoners of winter against one another.

Yesterday I took our "Guess the Reader" contest winner with me on a lunch hour shopping spree. The above is one of the choice books we brought back with us for our library.

Here's the write up:
In Oct. of 2001 paint was spilled on the streets of Montreal. A stark primative bike symbol, looking suspiciously like the one the city used to designate the bike path; a giant zipper, pulled open down the centre line of the street on a busy commuter route ; the footprint of a giant, stomping through the city while the people slept. By 2004 Roadsworth had pulled off close to 300 pieces of urban art on the streets of Montreal. In the fall he was charged with 51 counts of public mischief. It seemed to signal the end of his career. Instead the citizens of Montreal and lovers of his work from around the world rallied their support. A year later he was let off with a slap on the wrist.

This is a thought provoking look at- What is considered public space?, Is graffiti art? When is graffiti art? Will societies views on graffiti change? Are they changing now?

This past spring my husband and I were at the public library, browsing around, this was the book he brought home with him. It was his inspiration to build a go-cart (he had one when he was a kid, and dreamed of building his own). He quickly gathered pieces and began the build. Here are some photos.

I'm not sure whether it was all the creepy stories my brothers told me about mysterious creatures lurking in the dark and the shadows or if it's because it's Halloween night. But as I sat curled up reading this book, I couldn't help but wonder if there really is or could be such a thing as Sasquatch.

This book takes a look at the native american myths and legends of Bigfoot, current scientists that are actively researching and investigating any evidence that comes up, as well as debunking some stories that have circulated. It was fascinating to hear of real science being applied to these investigations. The question is do you believe? and if not maybe this book will convince you for the next time your out in the woods.
Oh Yeah, this book even references an article from the Lethbridge Herald of 1959. And I especially love the end papers featuring a deep dark forest and quotes Hall has collected during her research of the book.

The photos from the Nova Scotia archives also provide the reader with a true sense of how forceful the blast and the following tsunami was on the towns of Dartmouth and Halifax.
I can't wait to share this narrative non-fiction with G.S. Lakie students.

I was resisting this book, I though this book is gonna break my heart, this book is gonna depress me. Instead I got quite a surprize, I got a book so packed with mystery and suspense I could barely put it down. I got a book that is still with me a week after. Charlie Joe's Tip #12
The Library Can Be Your Friend.
Don't automatically assume that just because the library is filled with books it's a bad place.
   It all depends on why you're going there.
   For example, there's a pretty good movie section in most libraries. And they have computers.
   The library in my town even has a place to buy snacks. I like to grab a book (that I have no intention of reading), then amble over to the cafe for a little hot chocolate and conversation.
   Every once in a while I'll even open the book.
   Sometimes, a girl I know will wander over and ask me what I'm reading. (Unless she goes to my school, in which case she'll know that books and I don't get along.) Then I'll ask her what she's reading. Then I'll ask her lots of questions about her book, which shows how curious and senstive I am. Then I'll say it sounds like a book I might like. She'll smile. I'll smile back.
   Yeah-like I said, the library can be your friend.

As you can tell Charlie Joe is a bit of a player ;-)

Another terrific book, this time short stories. Thrillers! say it with me Thriller. Even just saying the word gives a bit of a shiver down the spine. These ten stories are great, some better than others, but I felt entertained by each of them. Here's a little taste from the intro.

Well, if there is gonna be a book that will make you late for school, it might be this one. It almost made me late for the very first day of school. I was reading as fast as I could, getting more and more caught up in Saba's story. I described the book to Mr. Newman and Ms. Garner this way -- it's like The Hunger Games and MadMax and True Grit all rolled up in one. Written in an interesting dialect of the old west, this captures how language changes in different times. I thought of this book many times throughout the day and when that bell rang at 3:30 I knew I needed to get home to finish it. Wow! If your in need of an action packed trill ride with strong characters, action, drama, suspence and unpredictability - this should be your next book. To add to my admiration of the book Moira Young the author is Canadian.

Stickman Odyssey: an epic doodle by Christopher Ford

Well, this one by far was my favourite read in my Graphic Novel Blitz. There is something about stickmen cartooning that I think is endearing for all of us. It somehow puts us all on a level playing field- that is because we can all draw a stickman, and with a few added lines or bendy lines suddenly our stickman is running. Ta da! Now when you're good at the stickman all you need is a story - no, an epic story. And your on your way. That's how I imagine Christopher Ford got his start, and he just ran with it.

Of course this is a retelling of a very classic story, - The Odyssey. For those of you who have never heard of it, well, it's gonna cross your path someday. But I'm pretty sure some of you will recognise the retelling of these ancient Greek stories. This was laugh out loud funny in places. I really, really liked it.

Summary:

When Zozimos is banished by an evil witch (his stepmother) from the kingdom of Sticatha- the kingdom he was next in line to rule - he trains at battle ( if you can call chasing butterflies training), travels across stormy seas (thanks for that Poseidon), slays golems and monsters (with a lot of help), charms beautiful women (not really) and somehow (despite his own ineptitude) survives quest after quest. By the love of Zeus, though, none of it brings him closer to home!

It does however, make for one quirky, original, giggle provoking graphic novel sure to appeal to any kid interested in Greek Mythology, or mearly looking for an entertaining read.

Loved it.

Bad Island by Doug TenNapel

I was very impressed with Doug TenNapel's first graphic novel Ghostopolis, it was wierd, creepy, fun. I wanted that same feeling from this book, and unfortunately this one kind of fell flat. I feel bad just saying that, I mean look at it! Full-colour, great title that suggests all sorts of wierd creepy fun, huge hours of drawing, colouring and writing this story - for what turned out to be just okay. Anyway, I hope some of you will review it and give me a different perspective about it.

Somthing on the island is up to no good...
When Reese is forced to go on a boating trip with his family, the last thing he expects is to be shipwrecked on an island - especially one teeming with wierd plants and animals. But what starts out as simply as a bad vacation turns into a terrible one, as the castaways must find a way to escape while dodging the islands dangerous inhabitants. With few resources, and a mysterious entity on the hunt, each secret unlocked could save them... or spell their doom. One thing Reese knows for sure: this is one bad island.

Of course if you hadn't figured it out, this is the graphic novel version of the chapter books Daniel X. Daniel is working his way down the list of aliens that still need fighting, that he found from his father.
I read an early graphic novel (not manga) of this series and was impressed - maybe I should explain that, I'm not crazy about aliens and alien hunters, but I thought that it might appeal to some of the readers at my school, and it does. Both the chapter books and the graphic novels are circulating so I can't be that far off. I think I prefer the first graphic novel styling better than the more recent manga styling, but this seems to be the route James Patterson wants to go with the rebranding of the series.

This is the sequel to Tower of Treasure which I had a lot of fun reading. So I quickly reaquainted myself with the characters and joined the story and the mystery surrounding Dessa and her friends. Well drawn, colourful, and fast-paced. This is one that will be sure to pull you in and get you going in graphic novels.

Summary: Young readers will feel transported by the clever, intricate plotline and superb, sweeping illustrations of this second title in the Three Thieves series. The action resumes as our three goodhearted fugitives stop at a roadside inn during a ferocious thunderstorm. Narrow escapes ensue as Grig, the schemeing shelfish inn keeper, endeavours to capture the trio and secure a reward from the Queen. Defiance by Carla Jablonski and Leland Purvis

This is book 2 in this series about young French resistance fighters during World War II. Once again I got caught up in both the illustrations and the story of Tessier family and how they are coping during the war but also how each is assisting in the defiance of Nazi rule that has invaded their homeland.

Here is the summary.
When Nazi's invade what can children do to fight them?
World War II has taken its toll on the French countryside. German soldiers patrol the towns, searching for any challenge to their rule. The Tessier siblings Paul, Marie and Sophie, keep their noses clean and their faces blank as the French Military Police tighten their grip on the small country town. But all three are secretly doing their part for the Resistance : the men and women working hard to undermine the Germans and win back France's freedom... even if it costs them their lives.

I also appreciated the historical notes at the end of the book, that gave more information on the efforts of the French resistance during the occupation, as well as information on Charles De Gaul. You can tell this book has been well researched, a bonus to the capitvating story.

I think this might be my favourite book this summer, I don't know, there was just something about it that made me laugh, believe in the characters and cheer with how things turned out. I've got it ordered for our library, so be patient in the mean time here is the summary from the publisher.
Summary:
Food, Girls and Other Things I Can't Have is the story of a boy who doesn't fit -- in his pants, in his family, in his school or in his life. If Andrew Zansky can only be thin enough, smart enough, or popular enough, he thinks everything in his life will be perfect. His father will come back home. The pretty girl in school will fall in love with him. His Mom will be happy again.
While he is working to achieve this fantasy future, Andrew eats. A lot. He buries his problems in his mom's mini-snacks, analyzing his world while stuffing down his feelings. I know many of you are dreading coming back to school -- who can blame you, the weather has finally cooperated, there's still a pile of stuff you want to do (or at least I still have stuff I want to do.) Anyways... like it or not you'll be finding your way back to the doors of G.S. Lakie next week, eager to see friends, learn who is in your class (and that is probably about it as far as anticipation goes - so I think many of you will be able to relate to the main character in this book - Rafe. Rafe isn't too keen on school, and his unique way of coping with things is the only thing that holds his interest or excitement. Overall I enjoyed this look at grade sixer Rafe, his family, classmates and teachers. I just hope that none of you attempt his crazy scheme.

Generously sprinkled with cartoon style illustrations keeps readers interest and the pace of the story flowing.
If you're all caught up in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, you might give this one a try.

Greener Grass: the famine years by Caroline Pignat

This was another one of the titles that I read in my training for the 24 hour reading marathon. Luckily for me it was a very interesting, captivating read. For any of you that have a thread of Irish in your family tree this would give you terrific historical insight into how many Irish families ended up immigrating to Canada and the U.S.. Good characterization, and I feel like I have a greater understanding into life and times of the Irish potato famine.

Summary.
Kit Bryne's family is a strong one, but their strength and unity are being severely tested, as life becomes more and more desperate in 19th century rural Ireland. Lord Fraser is the wealthy landowner, from which the Brynes and many other families rent thier lands. When the potatoe blight hits, the farmers can no longer make their payments much less produce food for themselves and the cruel system has no mercy as Lord Fraser wields an iron fist, driving families from their homes and burning their cottages.
Kits dreams are now dashed as her family experiences a series of tragedies and as she undergoes a daunting event that tears her away from her family. With her father dead, she must fight for survival and help her ailing mother and siblings escape Ireland for good.
The story is a glimpse into the tragic events of the great hunger, the famine that devastated Ireland, forcing thousands of improvished families to seek better fortunes outside of their homeland.

This book won the Governor Generals Literary Award in 2009. The sequel is Wild Geese, which I hope to read before too long.

Close to Famous by Joan Bauer

If you've ever taken part in one of my book talks you'll know I often describe books as "yummy", well this book was "yummy beyone belief." I think I ate it up just like the cupcakes that Foster makes. Delicous! Mmmm Mmmmm.
Here's some of my favourite quotes from the book.

Meanwhile, Culpepper seems to provide a safe haven. But Foster and her mother can't hide forever.

I started my training for a 24 hour reading challenge that I`m going to do later on this year, so on my first attempt, I gathered up a stack of books and got myself comfortable with a pillow, deck chair, sunglasses, water, coffee, snacks, etc. and started reading. This was the third book of the day - about seven hours into my training. I liked it okay but I think I was comparing it with Savy which I loved. So if you liked Savy by Ingrid Law this might be a good choice for you. Piper and her friends are longing to use their special powers to good use and the longer they spend at that school the rustier they seem to be getting - how can they turn things back around?

Hi, I'm back. I've had a glorious summer vacation with most of it being spent out at the cabin in Beaver Mines, and as some of you know, it's pretty rustic out there, no cell phone reception, no computer, no phone for that matter, so I didn't really have a chance to blog about any of the books I read over the summer.
Here goes --

I don't usually blog about picture books but I will make an exception for this one, in which shark and train go head to head in an all out competion of every sort imaginable. Who will win? Your guess is as good as mine. Loved it, can't wait to share it with some of you and with my neice and nephew.

Z by Michael Thomas Ford

Okay, so I don't remember who it was that suggested I take this one home with me, but Thank you! This was my first zombie book, yes, Z is for Zombie, and well if you need an action packed, edge of your seat book that has video games, zombies and just the right amount of gore - then this might be the book for you.

Summer Reading

Well, here it is at last -- summertime. The time to kick back and enjoy doing not much of anything. For me this means spending time at the cabin, getting in some hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and some ordinary chore type of stuff - getting the oil changed on the car, mow the lawn, weed the garden etc. I've also got a bit of travel planned. And of course summer reading!

School House Rocks

The other day I heard this terrific rendition of an old School House Rock song. Many of you have probably never heard of School House Rock - it's from the States and it was an after school cartoon that used song to re-enforce stuff you learned in school. My husband has made me familiar with some of his favourites -- sooooo when this rap version of Mr. Morton came on the radio he could sing along. Subject, predicate and a cool explaination of how they work together.

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

When Mrs. Babki asked me if I had read The Westing Game, I had to say no, because I hadn't, in fact I don't know if I had even heard of it. She said she was interested in it and that it sounded like the perfect book to introduce mystery / dectective / forensics to her grade six classes. Well, if they were going to tackle all that - maybe I should too.

It turned out to be a terrific mystery / guessing game filled with clues and red herrings (false clues) and some pretty interesting characters. I think it will be alot of fun.

Here's the summary:
This highly inventive mystery involves sixteen people who are invited to the reading of Samuel W. Westing's will. They could become millionaires - it all depends on how they play the tricky and dangerous Westing game, a game involving blizzards, buglaries and bombings . Ellen Raskin has created a cast of characters in a puzzle knotted, word twisting plot filled with humor, intrigue and suspence.

Apparently there has been a movie made - I have my name on the hold list at the public library. But I don't know if they can squeeze everything from that book into a movie. I'll report back whether it makes the cut.
